There is a lot of cutesy Princess Mononoke fanart out there but San hates humans, and we first see her with a face covered in blood, so I wanted to draw something that felt more like her reality. It struck me how in Miyazaki's concept sketches San has this soft green hair, it's a detail I made sure to include. Though I enjoyed taking some liberties, like since San spends all day outdoors I imagine her skin could actually be quite tanned.
